The
CARIBLUJAZZEAN CONNECTION
an exciting,
educational, inspirational & “just plain fun” program for students and
teachers
WHAT DO YOU GET?
3
Pre-Performance Classroom Workshop, “Meet the Stars of Music History”
§
Students
“meet” some of the performers that they will see onstage in the Live
Performance. The twist? It’s all part of a live “Talk Show” in their
classroom!
§
Some
students serve as Talk Show Hosts and work from Prompt Questions, while
the rest get involved with further questions
§
The actor
portraying the musical artist becomes a “living link to history” giving
students a personal understanding of the personal struggles and triumphs
of the artist. Students are encouraged to discuss how history relates to
life today.
3 Live
performance of “The CARIBLUJAZZEAN CONNECTION”
§
45 – 60 minutes
long, for indoor audiences of any size.
§
Historically famous African-American, Hispanic and Caribbean composers
and performers, including James Bland, Robert Johnson, Chuck Berry, and
Bob Marley “come alive” to perform examples of their work and talk about
their lives and times, from the late 1700’s through 1970’s.
§
The
performance presents West African rhythms, Gospel music, Minstrelsy,
Blues, Latin music, Rock-n-Roll, and Reggae, in a way that shows the
progression of American music history from the perspective of Congo
Square, New Orleans.
3
Post-Performance “You Can Do It!” Classroom Writing Workshop
§
Stampley
presents a short performance in the classroom that showcases several
musical styles.
§
Students
are given a set of guidelines and concepts to stimulate their creativity
in writing, and are asked to begin writing immediately
§
Stampley
randomly selects several students’ work and improvises performances of
them as complete songs in a particular style on the spot. This
creates a high level of interest and excitement from the students, and
often encourages them to continue their development in creative writing.
