Do our "small" individual contributions to making this world a better place really count?
Margaret Meade the world famous Anthropologist said: "Never doubt, that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world, indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." So maybe being "A Drop in the Bucket" is very necessary to change. Globally, our government (and the businesses that run them), especially, as well as many other governments around the world, are being irresponsibly slow to moving us towards solving some very pressing issues. Poverty, disease, water shortages, food shortages (famine), wars, lack of educational resources, need for key industrial developments, etc. … I could go on and on. Probably the most pressing need, and one that impacts all the rest, is ENERGY NEEDS The oil debate is quickly becoming academic. Many of the top international scientists and oil experts quietly discuss the "peak oil" problem. Which means, that there is increasingly less oil available. A major study shows that the large oil companies spent over 5 billion dollars searching for oil in 2006, …and found 4 billion dollars worth oil. A 10 to 15% drop in oil deliveries will have catastrophic effect on the world economies. Not very promising. Add to that global warming, increased air quality problems etc., caused by the increased use of oil by us and other countries like China , and I think a "6th grader" could see we need to be getting of this horse in a very big way, fast ! Not the slow , "politically correct" pandering to the oil, auto and energy companies. That our "leaders" are doing. (Plus the fact that they have been aware of this mess since the 60's but were too busy making money and discrediting strong research that verified this, all to our peril) So what can we do? A grassroots movement, is definitely in order, I'd say! In fact, it has begun, and has been going on for many years I'm offering my "Drop in the Bucket" Newsletter and Forum As a way to become part of this movement. We are interested in: RENEWABLE SOURCES of ENERGY Solar, Wind power, Hydropower, Biomass, Biofuels, Geothermal. these have been developed and are our current best bets; they are renewable and not harmful to manor environment when used properly. Fossil fuels are out. It is absolutely one of the main causes of global warming as proven by the vast majority of "responsible" scientists and researchers around the globe, not to mention the high carcinogenic and other negative by products they produce. Nuclear energy though in wide use is fraught with massive costs, to build (no plant has ever been built on schedule or without huge cost overruns). Of the 109 nuclear plants in the U.S. all need serious repair or rebuilding. The Yucca Mt. waste facility which is supposed to solve the waste problem is built on the third most seismically active sites in Nevada; the residents are fighting it tooth and nail. (It may not be used for what it is intended) Meanwhile existing plant containment areas are filling with waste, that could and (does in some instances) contaminate surrounding communities, and pose a security threat with heightening terrorist threats from without and within our borders. Sounds bleak? but as usual, it's gonna take you and me to save the day. Sounds daunting ? There are renewable energy initiatives being worked by communities on small scales throughout the world. (Remember my Margaret Meade quote at the beginning of this writing?) A Drop in the Bucket, will be devoted making renewable energy information, products, forums, etc. available to you A Drop in the Bucket Will ask you to share and promote your products and information A Drop in the Bucket Will ask you to contribute in what ever way you can to this movement . A Drop in the Bucket Will ask you to be a Drop in the Bucket….. ….You see enough drops in the bucket, make the bucket overflow !!
